Warnings over safety before Horsford Christmas Eve crash

Local councillors in Horsford had been urging Norfolk County Council to do something about the zebra crossing in Holt Road – which is just a few metres from the junction with Mill Lane – following a series of “very close calls”. The specific details of that collision are not yet clear but county councillor for the area, Tony Adams, said: “Both myself and Horsford Parish Council have been pushing for something to be done for quite a while. “We’ve suggested moving the crossing because it’s currently on top of Mill Lane and replacing it with traffic lights. “Lights would alert drivers and encourage them to stop.

“I think the county council should reconsider this.” The crossing allows people to access Horsford Medical Centre and the village pharmacy from the Mill Lane side of the road. Horsford Junior School is also in Mill Lane, which provides access to the dozens of new homes built on former farmland in the past decade.

A spokesman for Norfolk County Council confirmed discussions had taken place with Horsford Parish Council about potential safety measures “in late 2023”. “We’re looking into what’s possible, factoring in how effective these measures are likely to be and also cost and possible funding sources,” they added. “[We] are due to meet with the parish council again early in 2024 to discuss these further.” It is understood that the driver involved in the Christmas Eve crash is assisting police with their inquiries. The woman involved was initially taken to the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital but was later transferred to Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge, where she remains with serious injuries.

Officers would still like to hear from anyone who witnessed the collision or who may have any relevant dashcam footage and can be contacted on 101.
