Woman (40s) dies and two children seriously injured following Kildare road crash

A woman has been killed and two young children taken to hospital in a serious condition following a collision[1] in Co Kildare[2]. The collision between a car and a van occurred on the R148 at Cloncurry in Enfield at approximately 6.15pm on Tuesday.

The driver of the car, a woman aged in her 40s, was pronounced dead at the scene. Two young children who were also travelling in this vehicle have been taken to Children's Health Ireland (CHI) at Crumlin where their conditions are currently described as serious but stable.

The male driver of the van was taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries. The R148 at Cloncurry in between Enfield and Kilcock is currently closed. Local diversions are in place.

Garda Forensic Collision Investigators will conduct a technical examination of the scene on the morning of Wednesday 3rd January 2024. Gardai are appealing for any witnesses to this collision to come forward. Any road users who may have camera footage (including dash-cam) and were travelling on the R148 in between Enfield and Kilcock between 6pm and 6:30pm on Tuesday 2nd January 2024 are asked to make this footage available to Gardai.

Background

The collision in Kildare on Tuesday was the third fatal road crash of 2024. The first fatal collision to occur on Irish roads this year happened on the M7 at Curraghfarm near Kildare[4] at approximately 8:45pm on New Year's Day after a car travelling westbound between junction 12 (Newbridge) and 13 (Kildare[5]) left the motorway and struck a raised grass bank[6].

One of the passengers in the car, a male aged in his 20s, was pronounced deceased at the scene of the collision. The victim has since been identified as 27-year-old father-of-two Keith Higginbotham.

And a man was killed in a collision involving a car and a motorcycle that occurred at approximately 3:10pm on Tuesday on the main Cavan to Ballinagh road (N55) at Corlurgan in Co Cavan[7]. The motorcyclist, a man in his 40s, was pronounced deceased at the scene. No other injuries to persons was reported.

Gardai are appealing for any witnesses to this collision to come forward. Any road users who may have camera footage (including dash-cam) and were travelling on the N55 in the Corlurgan area between 3pm and 3:30pm on Tuesday 2nd January 2024 are asked to make this footage available to Gardai.
