Woman killed in crash on I-90; driver faces possible charges for operating while intoxicated, police say

HAMMOND — A woman is dead and two others injured after they were struck by an intoxicated driver Friday afternoon on the Indiana Toll Road, Indiana State Police said. The driver faces possible charges of operating while intoxicated causing death, a level five felony, and other misdemeanor charges, according to a news release from Indiana State Police. The woman was driving in a gray Nissan when she allegedly hydroplaned and struck a concrete barrier in between the east and west lanes, state police said.

The left and center lanes were littered with debris. A man in a white Lexus pulled his vehicle over on the road’s shoulder to check on her and crossed the road toward her car. He subsequently called 911 to report the crash and walked back to his car.

The woman in the gray Nissan exited her vehicle and moved to cross the road toward the Lexus and was struck by the driver in a blue Ford F250, state police said. He had swerved to avoid the debris, struck the woman and smashed into the back of the Lexus.
