Age-progression photo of Maura Murray released 20 years after disappearance of UMass student

Twenty years after the disappearance of University of Massachusetts Amherst student Maura Murray, authorities have released a new photograph of the woman altered to reflect her age as it would be today.

The Cold Case Unit of the New Hampshire Attorney General’s Office released the age-progression photo of Murray on Thursday in an effort to generate new leads, tips and helpful information in the ongoing investigation into the woman’s suspicious disappearance in Haverhill, New Hampshire on Feb.

9, 2004.

“We are continuing to work with our local, state, and federal partners, including the FBI, to identify resources to try to advance this case,” New Hampshire Attorney General Formella said in a statement. “It is our hope that this twentieth anniversary of Ms. Murray’s disappearance will bring renewed attention to the case that might ultimately lead to justice and closure for the Murray family.”

Murray, a 21-year-old nursing student at UMass Amherst, left the university on Feb.

9, 2004. Around 7:30 p.m. that night, her car, a black-colored, four-door Saturn sedan, was involved in what appeared to be a single-car crash on Route 112, also known as Wild Ammonoosuc Road, in Haverhill, New Hampshire, according to Formella’s office.

Shortly after, a witness saw and spoke with a woman believed to be Murray at the scene of the crash.

However, when the police arrived, Murray was not there. She has not been seen or heard from since, the New Hampshire Attorney General’s Office detailed.

Murray was last seen earlier in the day on surveillance footage at an ATM wearing a dark jacket and jeans. She did not share with others she was going to New Hampshire, which is around 2.5 hours away from UMass Amherst, Formella’s office noted.

In the years since Murray went missing, law enforcement and private citizens have searched the area at and around the crash scene numerous times “with no positive results,” the New Hampshire Attorney General’s Office said.

An avid runner and hiker of the White Mountains, Murray went to the United States Military Academy at West Point before transferring to UMass Amherst to study nursing.

The age-progression photo of Murray was produced by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and is being used as part of ongoing investigative efforts into the woman’s disappearance.

The release of the picture “is consistent with missing person investigations and not based on a change in the investigative posture of this case or new information,” according to Formella’s office.

“The photograph represents an FBI analysis and projection of what Ms.

Murray might look like in 2024,” the New Hampshire Attorney General’s Office said.

Anyone with information about Murray is asked to call the Cold Case Unit at (603) 271-2663 or email the unit at [email protected].
