Cowgirls fall in battle to Texas A&M Corpus
LAKE CHARLES, La. (KPLC) - The McNeese Cowgirls hosted the Texas A&M Corpus Christi Islanders who sat at third in the Southland conference standings, the Cowgirls would do their best to claw their way back into this one after the Islanders jumped out to a double-digit lead, but in the end they came up short as they suffered a 78-64 loss.
The Cowgirls lead 7-6 with 6:25 remaining in the first quarter but the Islanders offense would come alive as they went on a 17-5 run to gain an 11-point advantage.
In the second quarter, the Cowgirls would rally back with a 14-1 run and after a Boston Berry three-pointer followed by a layup from Marta Hermosa, the Cowgirls would find themselves up 2 at the break.
The Cowgirls couldn't hold onto the lead in the second half as the Islanders once again the Islanders offense created some separation.
On a positive not Cristina Gil led the Cowgirls with 15 points in her first game back at the Legacy Center since returning from injury.
With the loss the Cowgirls losing streak extends to 14 games their next matchup will be at the Legacy Center as they take on the Lamar Cardinals at 7 pm.
"We kept fighting and that's something we haven't seen the last week so I was proud of our team for getting back into it our second quarter was probably the best we've played all year, our execution was good, our defense stepped up we limited their shots because we were blocking out and the third quarter they had that 8-0 run I believe but we got back into it but you see in the fourth quarter our intensity went down," Head Coach Lynn Kennedy said.
