M25 fatal crash: Man charged after two killed in collision

Barancan Nurcin, of High Road in Tottenham, was charged with two counts of causing death by dangerous driving and four counts of causing serious injury by dangerous driving.

The 22-year-old has been remanded in custody and will appear at Hatfield Magistrates’ Court today (Wednesday 21).

The collision happened between Junctions 22 for London Colney and 21A for St Albans at around 4am on Sunday, February 4. Four vehicles were involved – a white Citroen Dispatch van, a silver DFSK 580 Glory, a silver Skoda Superb and a black Peugeot 5008.

A woman and a man died in the collision, with four others seriously injured and one man remaining in a critical but stable condition.

Hertfordshire police officers spotted the white Citroen Dispatch on the M1, which had been reported as stolen, and a short time afterwards, the officers activated their vehicle’s lights and sirens in an attempt to stop the driver of the van.

This was quickly abandoned though, as the officers assessed the risk of continuing was too high, and shortly before 4am, on Breakspear Way, a second pursuit took place which was also abandoned.

A short time later, the van was then seen by a police officer travelling on the wrong side of the M25.

At approximately 4.08am, the van was involved in a collision with the three other vehicles.

As a matter of course, the incident was referred to the Independent Office for Police Conduct, who are now investigating, and Essex Police are conducting a criminal investigation into the collision.
