Morrisons worker trapped under collapsed wall after van crashes into shop

A woman was trapped under a collapsed wall after a van crashed into a West Country Morrisons shop. The Cornish store was struck by a vehicle that had already smashed into two other cars.

Police were alerted to a crash involving a van at 5.45pm yesterday (Monday, February 12).. It was reported that the van crashed into two cars along the road before hitting the Morrisons Daily building on Robartes Terrace in Illogan, reports Cornwall Live.[1]

A woman became trapped under the collapsed wall of the store after the van crashed. She was checked over by emergency services at the scene and sustained a minor injury.

A man in his 50s from Redruth[4] has since been arrested on suspicion of driving without care and attention and for driving while under the influence of alcohol. He has been released under investigation by police as enquiries continue.

A witness has told CornwallLive[5]: “The van came from Park Bottom at high speed apparently. It hit another van that was giving way to him.

“Then it mounted the pavement by the roundabout flattening a couple of bollards. The wall that it went through is right where the till is in the shop. There was someone serving there at the time.”


The full statement from Devon and Cornwall Police says: “Police were called at 5.45pm on 12 February to a report of a collision on Robartes Terrace in Illogan.

“It was reported that a vehicle had collided with two cars before colliding with a building, causing a wall to collapse. Further information suggested a pedestrian had become trapped under the wall. She was checked at the scene and had sustained a minor injury.

“A man in his 50s from Redruth was arrested on suspicion of driving without due care and attention and driving whilst under the influence of alcohol. He has been released under investigation whilst enquiries continue.

“Anyone who witnessed the incident or may have relevant dash cam footage is asked to contact police on 101 or via our website quoting log 578 of 12 February.”
