Poisoning probe, dog attack and missing teen: The police incidents on Teesside this week
This week, Teesside Live has reported on a poisoning probe, a missing teen and a 'dog attack'. Our rolling blog shows the latest 999 incidents from Middlesbrough, Stockton[1], Redcar[2] and Cleveland, Hartlepool, North Yorkshire and Darlington[3]. This week we reported on a number of incidents including the continued investigation into a 'suspected poisoning'.
Teesside GP Thomas Kwan appeared at Newcastle Magistrates' Court on Wednesday charged with attempted murder. The 52-year-old doctor was remanded in custody and will appear at Newcastle Crown Court in March. A woman, in her 30s, has also been arrested and 'released on police bail pending further enquiries'.
The alleged attempted murder has been described as a 'suspected poisoning', with reports made to police on Wednesday, January 24. The incident is understood to have taken place in Newcastle. Here's a round-up of that, and other incidents from our rolling blog that you can read in full here[4].
Vandals tear up Teesside golf course on quad bike
The damage at Billingham Golf ClubA quad bike has torn up part of a Teesside golf course making it unplayable for at least six months. Cleveland Police has launched an appeal for information about criminal damage caused at Billingham[5] Golf Club, which happened some time between 5pm on Thursday, February 1 and 6am on Friday, February 2. An unknown person, or people, have entered the grounds of golf club on Sandy Lane, on a quad bike before riding around a green - causing substantial damage to the grass.
As part of their enquiries, police are asking members of the public to come forward with information or dash cam/CCTV footage that could assist in identifying who is responsible. Read the full story here.[6] Volunteers' actions praised after woman injured in cafe
LilyAnne's Coffee BarThe heroic actions of volunteers have been praised after a woman was injured in a Hartlepool cafe[7] - leading to a "life threatening situation".
Police officers and paramedics were called to LilyAnne's Wellbeing Cafe, on Victoria Road in Hartlepool, following a report of concern for a woman's safety. The North East Ambulance Service[8] sent one ambulance crew, one specialist paramedic, and one duty officer to the scene. LilyAnne's Wellbeing Cafe said the venue was temporarily closed during the "medical incident" on Tuesday, and has now spoken out to praise volunteers.
Management said the team administered life saving support and the woman is now undergoing emergency surgery. Read the full story here[9]. Audi driver in 'serious but stable condition' after two-car smash on edge of Teesside
The crash took place on the B1264 between the Hornby junction and Low WorsallAn Audi driver is in a "serious" condition in hospital after a two-car smash just outside Teesside.
The crash took place on the B1264 between the Hornby junction and Low Worsall, at 9am on Monday. It involved a black Skoda and a silver Audi. North Yorkshire[10] Police has confirmed both drivers were taken to James Cook University Hospital[11], in Middlesbrough[12], for treatment.
A spokesperson said: "The driver of the Skoda was released with minor injuries, and the driver of the Audi remains in hospital in a serious but stable condition. Read the full story here[13]. CCTV images released after attack at Whitby pub on New Year's Day
CCTV appeal following assault in Whitby pub on New Year's DayCCTV images of two men have been released as part of an ongoing investigation into an assault inside a Whitby[14] pub.
The victim, a man in his 30s, reported being assaulted in The Whitby Way, on Wellington Road, at around 12.30am on January 1. As a result of the assault, the victim sustained injuries to his face and head. He reported that the attack was carried out by two men whose identities are currently unknown. North Yorkshire[15] Police has now released CCTV images following the attack on New Year's Day.

A picture from the sceneA man has been arrested after being caught taking GBP100,000 of suspected cannabis into Yorkshire from Teesside. Just after 4.30am on Thursday morning, officers in North Yorkshire[17] were alerted to a vehicle which had been seen acting suspiciously.
Officers from the force's specialist operations team headed to the A1(M) and spotted it at Junction 45, Boston Spa. The vehicle was seen driving dangerously and continued on the M1 towards Leeds. West Yorkshire Police joined North Yorkshire officers in a chase and followed the vehicle at high speeds along the motorway.
Officers were forced to make tactical contact with the vehicle to bring it to a halt at Junction 39 of the M1 at Bretton. Police said a search of the vehicle found a large quantity of what is suspected cannabis with an estimated street value of GBP100,000. Read the full story here[18].
Alleged attempted murder victim in hospital as poisoning probe continues
Brading Court, Ingleby BarwickThe alleged victim in a 'suspected poisoning' remains in hospital in a 'serious condition'. Northumbria Police has confirmed a man, who is in his 70s, is in a "serious but stable condition". An investigation into the 'suspected poisoning' continues as Teesside GP Thomas Kwan appeared at Newcastle Magistrates' Court on Wednesday charged with attempted murder.

A couple are being sought by police after they were heard shouting racial abuse at customers in a Northallerton pubCCTV images have been released following an incident at a Wetherspoons pub involving a couple shouting 'racial abuse' at fellow customers. The alleged incident took place at Northallerton pub,[20] The Buck Inn, on Monday, January 22. North Yorkshire[21] Police said the couple were heard shouting racial abuse at other customers and when they were asked to leave they became aggressive.
A spokesperson confirmed police are treating the incident as a public order offence and a hate crime. Officers believe a man and woman pictured by CCTV may have information that could help the investigation. Read the full story here[22].
*WARNING DISTRESSING IMAGE* Sheep put down after 'dog attack' near Stokesley
The aftermath of the 'attack'A sheep left with splintered neck bones and a puncture wound was put down after reports of a 'dog attack' near Stokesley. The shocking incident took place in a field by the River Leven and near the junction of the A172 and Thirsk Road, on Tuesday evening. North Yorkshire[23] Police said the attack left the sheep with a "deep puncture wound" and broken, splintered neck bones.

The patients are being treated at James Cook, in MiddlesbroughThree people were treated in hospital after a two-car crash which closed a major road.
The incident involved a black Nissan Juke and a blue Volkswagen Caddy travelling on the A171/Fancy Lane towards Guisborough[26]. The crash took place at around 3.20pm on Thursday, February 8. A 60-year-old man travelling in the Nissan Juke was taken to James Cook University Hospital[27], in Middlesbrough[28], suffering from possible pelvic and leg injuries.
A 32-year-old man travelling in the VW Caddy was extracated by fire crews and taken to the same hospital with a broken leg and possible pelvic injuries. A 26-year-old woman also travelling in the VW Caddy suffered a broken collar bone and was also taken to the hospital. Read the full story here[29].
Police issue direct appeal to missing teen Lewis Penfold-Roche
Video LoadingVideo UnavailableClick to play Tap to playThe video will auto-play soon8CancelLewis Penfold-Roche has not been seen since Sunday, January 28, when he was spotted in the Station Road area of Billingham[30], heading towards Central Avenue at around 6pm. Now, a detective investigating his disappearance has appealed directly to the 18-year-old, saying: "You are not in any trouble - we just want to know that you are safe and well." Officers are continuing to piece together Lewis' movements including speaking with his associates, scouring hours of CCTV footage and issuing public appeals for information.
The direct appeal to Lewis comes as concerns for his welfare grow on Friday. When he was last seen, Lewis was wearing a red coat and carrying a white and green backpack. He may be wearing a black jumper with the Jack Skellington character on the front, or a black Adidas jumper with white stripes down the sleeves.

Police on the A689 following the crash and (inset) Conor HollandInvestigations are continuing into a tragic crash on the A689 in Hartlepool. Officers were called to the major road on Friday, November 17, 2023, after a blue Audi collided with railings[32] around 10.15pm.
A huge cordon was erected across the dual carriageway at the time, with images showing the large police presence at the scene. It was later confirmed that Hartlepool[33] man Conor Holland, 24, had died following a two-vehicle crash, leaving behind his mam, dad, and sister who were devastated by his loss. At the time, a 22-year-old man, who was driving a blue VW Golf, was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.
He was later bailed. On Tuesday, Cleveland Police[34] provided an update to Teesside Live confirming that enquiries are continuing into the incident. A spokesperson could not share any further details.

The junction of Tibbersley Avenue and Belasis Avenue and the nearby roundaboutA cyclist remains in hospital after suffering head, face, internal injuries and a broken arm in a serious smash. The one-vehicle crash happened on Belasis Avenue, in Billingham[36], last Sunday and involved an electric pedal cycle.
The 60-year-old male cyclist suffered serious injuries and remains in hospital. Emergency services were called to the scene at 6.10pm and the man was taken to James Cook University Hospital[37]. A police spokesperson said: "The cyclist suffered serious head and facial injuries, internal injuries and a broken arm.
He was taken to James Cook University Hospital and remains in hospital." Read the full story here[38]. 'Concern' as jogging bottoms, socks and cap discovered in Saltburn
Police are appealing for any information relating to items of clothing found at the top of HuntcliffPolice are searching for the owner of several clothing items after they were discovered at the top of Huntcliff in Saltburn[39].
The items of clothing appear to include a pair of socks, grey jogging bottoms, a red cap and a rosette. They were discovered at the top of Huntcliff on Wednesday evening - with Cleveland Police[40] saying they do not know who they belong to. Social media reports suggest that there was also police and coastguard activity at the slipway near The Ship Inn, on Saltburn Road[41].
There were also reports that a police helicopter was hovering above the coastal town around 8.30pm - however, this has not yet been confirmed by authorities.
