One of Prince George[1]’s godparents revealed that she got hurt on a winter holiday.

Last week, Julia Samuel announced that she broke her shoulder by posting an Instagram[2] video showing her left arm in a sling. According to Hello![3], the accident happened during a ski vacation with her family in the French Alps.

“This is being filmed by my granddaughter, she always does my holiday reels. But today, she is filming me with my busted shoulder,” Julia began the quick clip. “On the first morning of our holiday, I fell on nothing and busted my shoulder. I’ve got 10 pins in my shoulder,” she said, as someone off-camera corrected her to specify, “Nails, not pins!”

“I can’t really move very much,” she added, joking that she named her broken shoulder Trudy.

Julia is a psychotherapist, Founder Patron of Child Bereavement U.K.[4], friend of the late Princess Diana[5] and one of Prince George’s godparents[6]. Prince William[7] and Kate Middleton[8] chose seven godparents for their eldest son, now 10, when he was baptized in 2013.

According to a royal source, the godparents were picked because Prince William and Princess Kate “wanted to include family and friends and reflect their life on both sides.” The group also includes Prince William’s cousin Zara Tindall[10], Prince William and Prince Harry[11]’s former private secretary Jamie Lowther-Pinkerton, the son of one of William’s godparents Earl “Hugh” Grosvenor, the couple’s college friend Oliver Baker, mutual friend Emilia Jardine-Paterson and family friend William van Cutsem.

It’s a custom for royal children to have a group of godparents, and King Charles[12] and Princess Diana gave their sons, William and Harry, six godparents each.

“There’s a feeling that because of their role as members of the royal family that they need as many confidants as they can get apart from their parents,” royal editor Robert Jobson previously told ABC News[13].

Julia received an MBE for services to bereaved children in the 2015 New Year’s Honors list, and Prince William and Prince Harry have both shined a spotlight on her charity Child Bereavement U.K. The Prince of Wales, 41, has been a royal patron of the organization since 2009, and the Duke of Sussex, 39, wrote an emotional forward to the children’s book Hospital by the Hill, which promoted the services offered by charities including Child Bereavement U.K., in 2021.[15]

Alongside Prince William and Prince Harry, Julia attended the unveiling of the statue[17] of Princess Diana in the Sunken Garden at Kensington Palace in July 2021. The late Princess of Wales died at age 36 in 1997 following a car accident in Paris, and her sons unveiled a statue erected in her memory 24 years later on what would have been her 60th birthday.

Julia has previously spoken about her bond with her godson Prince George, and how she wishes Princess Diana could have met him.

“He’s amazing. He’s funny and feisty and cheeky and — God, she [Diana] would have loved him so much,” she said on the How To Fail With Elizabeth Day podcast[18] in 2020. “That is heartbreaking for all of them.”
