Two injured after M5 crash where lorry went off road

A large emergency service presence was seen on the M5, southbound, between junction 7 (near Spetchley Services) this morning (Thursday).

A lorry had crashed into a car left stranded on the carriageway and went down an embankment. 

A West Mercia Police spokesperson said: “We were called about reports of a lorry having left the M5 southbound near junction 7 near Spetchley just after 2am this morning.

“A lorry was in collision with a stranded car that was unoccupied and left the carriageway and went down an embankment.

“The driver of the lorry was not seriously injured.”

Five Hereford & Worcester Fire and Rescue Service crews were on the scene of the crash.

A spokesperson for Hereford & Worcester Fire and Rescue Service said: “Five Hereford & Worcester Fire and Rescue Service crews – two from Worcester and one each from Droitwich, Evesham and Malvern Fire Stations – plus the incident command unit from Droitwich were called at 2.15am on February 29 to a road traffic collision involving a large vehicle on the M5 Southbound between junctions 6 and 7.

“A lorry had been in collision with a car on the hard shoulder of the motorway.

“Two male casualties were handed over to the care of the ambulance service who attended along with police.

“The incident was marked as pending closure at 3.06am.”

A spokesperson for West Midlands Ambulance Service added: “We were called to an RTC between junctions 6 and 7 of the M5 Southbound near Warndon, Worcester at around 2.05am.

“An ambulance and a paramedic officer were sent to the scene where, on arrival, crews discovered a lorry and a parked car had been involved in a collision.

“The driver of the car, who was not in the vehicle at the time of the collision, was assessed by ambulance staff but did not appear to be injured so he was given self-care advice and discharged at the scene.

“The driver of the lorry did not wish to be assessed.”
