Vandalised speed camera in Cornwall reinstalled after being chopped down

A speed camera which was chopped down by vandals has been reinstalled and is ready to catch speeding motorists once again. The vandalised camera along Tregolls Road in Truro[1] was attacked in the early hours of January 3.

The same evening, a camera on the A39[2] at Perranarworthal near the Norway Inn between Falmouth[3] and Truro was also targeted for a second time. The cameras were installed in March 2023 after years of campaigning from residents and a local action group.

Each costs the taxpayer about £20,000 to replace, according to Devon and Cornwall Police[4]. The force said two men were arrested on suspicion of criminal damage after the attacks at Truro and Perranarworthal.

In a further update on January 18, police said both men were bailed until April 2, pending further inquiries.

A new speed camera in the 30mph zone along Tregolls Road was pictured today (February 13) having been reinstalled after the attack. It is not yet known when the camera in Perranarworthal will be replaced.

The latest spate of vandalism came after a series of five other speed camera attacks in Cornwall in recent months with each one being cut down under cover of darkness. A camera on New Row in Longdowns[7] was also believed to have been chopped down on the evening of November 16.

Pictured on Wednesday, January 3, two 30mph speed cameras in Cornwall have been cut down overnight. One on the A39 at Perranarworthal, and this one in Tregolls Road in Truro.

A speed camera also on the A394 at Trewennack near Helston[8], appeared to have been taken out using an angle grinder, sparking anger from a senior police officer. That incident followed two others which were cut down a few weeks prior to those incidents on the A39 at Perranarworthal between Truro and Falmouth.

Slightly farther afield from the others, a camera was also vandalised at Drakewalls, Gunnislake, near the Devon border[9] , which saw a maintenance panel ripped off and wires inside sliced through.
