Victim stabbed in taxi robbery as police intercept vehicle on M42
A man was arrested after a victim was stabbed in a taxi robbery. The stolen vehicle was driven 100-miles to the West Midlands before it was intercepted by traffic officers.
Greater Manchester Police (GMP) said initially a vehicle had been travelling at speed, which resulted in a four-vehicle road traffic collision in Salford last night, Friday, February 16. Injuries suffered by those at the scene were not life-threatening.
Police said the offender fled on foot and a nearby taxi was taken violently where the driver was threatened at knifepoint. Around three hours later the stolen vehicle it was stopped on the M6.
Central Motorway Police Group (CMPG) officers managed to halt the stolen vehicle using tactical pursuit and containment. A 29-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of robbery and wounding with intent to do grievous bodily harm. He is in the process of being transferred to GMP custody for questioning.
CMPG posted on X: "Our @StaffsPolice & @WMPolice officers managed to intercept a stolen taxi stolen in a robbery in the @gmpolice area where the victim was stabbed. We managed to stop the stolen vehicle using #TPAC on the M6 J2 area and arrest the driver #robbery #GBH."
Chief Inspector Simon Ashcroft of GMP’s Salford district said: “This is understandably a terrifying ordeal for those involved last night, but after a swift response by our dedicated local officers and the support of the wider force, we were not only able to manage the scene effectively, we also detained the suspect with assistance from colleagues in another force before any further harm could be caused.
“I hope this result shows that we will use all the resources available to us to detect and detain offenders quickly who are intent on causing unnecessary harm to innocent members of the public.
“As we continue to investigate to bring justice, if anyone has any further information in relation to this incident, or footage including dashcam, doorbell or CCTV, they can do so by calling 101 quoting incident 3337 of 16/02/2024.” Alternatively, details can be passed on anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
