A334 Charles Watts Way closure near M27 extended for months
Back in November 2023, Hampshire County Council announced that major road works were due to go ahead on A334 Charles Watts Way in Hedge End.
The authority said that a landslip at the side of the major road meant that urgent repair works needed to be carried out to prevent it from becoming worse.
From November 27, a one-way closure along the road from Kanes Hill roundabout to the M27 junction has been in place – and many Southampton motorists have felt its impact.
This was due to last 14 weeks, with the closure supposedly ending around mid-February.
Despite this, Hampshire County Council has now extended the closure until June 7.
Southampton drivers have begun offering their thoughts on the closure extension with one resident labelling the closure “a complete nightmare.”
One motorist, who wanted to remain unnamed, said: “It is always trouble for drivers coming off the M27 at junction seven, or those travelling through Hedge End.
“Every morning the tailbacks are unbearable – we felt this most with the closure of the M27 a few weeks back.”
On February 21, a lorry driver Michal Kaminski was killed after being involved in a three-vehicle crash. While emergency crews worked to fix the damage to the motorway – the following days Southampton was gridlocked.
The driver continued: “What is worse is that I have rarely seen work carried out on the road.
“I appreciate that work is weather dependant, but we are almost five months on from the closure being put in place and it feels like we are no further forward.”
Due to the eastbound lane closure, a diversion route through Kanes Hill A27 to Junction 8 of the M27, with a separate diversion route for non-motorway traffic, has been in place.
Hampshire County Council has been contacted for comment.
