Cyclist spotted on Glasgow M8 could have had ‘serious accident’ on busy motorway
A van driver feared a ‘serious accident’ would take place after spotting a brazen cyclist[1] peddling along the M8 in Glasgow.
Jason Muir and a colleague were driving along the southbound stretch of the busy motorway, on the Kingston Bridge, on Thursday February 15 when they saw the cyclist. They were both taken aback and feared that the person could get hurt.
He claims the cyclist was “oblivious” and could have been in a serious collision. We previously reported how a delivery rider was said to be ‘terrified’[2] after being seen near J15 of the M8.
Jason told Glasgow Live: “I was driving my van over the bridge behind a few cars travelling very slowly, once they had pulled out to the other lane I saw the cyclist. My passenger snapped the picture.
“The cyclist was completely oblivious and wasn’t making any efforts to look out for traffic. Just after the picture was taken they moved over to the left lane near to the barrier without looking. Luckily nobody else was entering up that slip road or it would have been a serious accident.
“Both me and my colleague were shocked but not entirely surprised as we have both seen cyclists traveling along Glasgow’s motorways in the past. It is extremely concerning and dangerous.
“I don’t mind sharing the road with cyclists that are alert and aware of their actions. But recently so many of them are blasting through red lights, cutting through traffic and ignoring safe rules.

“I don’t know what the answer is, but if I drove like that in a car or motorbike I am sure I would receive some form of fine or points. If cyclists are going to use the roads then they should be held to the same standards as other motorists such as licence/training, knowledge of the highway code, insurance, and some form of roadworthy checks.”
Calls have been made for bike riders to learn the Highway Code after incidents of running red lights and riding on pavements. We previously reported how questions over bringing in new licensing rules[6] and an insurance requirement for delivery bikes in order to tackle the problem were raised by Labour councillor Patricia Ferguson.
