Fethi Kavas extradited to face trial over fatal M1 Northamptonshire crash

A man accused of causing a car passenger’s death was extradited to the UK after being arrested in Europe.

Fethi Kavas, 64, was detained in Bulgaria in relation to a collision on the M1 in Northamptonshire on 28 January 2018, which resulted in the death of 53-year-old David Levett.

The incident happened on the southbound carriageway when a lorry collided with two stationary cars.

He will appear at Northampton Crown Court on 25 April.

Northamptonshire Police said the suspect travelled to Turkey after the crash which led to Mr Levett’s death.

Officers said he did not return to the UK, leading to a red notice for his arrest being issued.

He was arrested in Bulgaria last month and extradited on 13 March – a day before appearing at Northampton Magistrates’ Court.

Kavas is charged with one count of causing death by dangerous driving and one count of causing serious injury by dangerous driving.
