Mosque’s statement after man dies in early-hours M62 crash

Shahid Ali, 37, has been named locally as the driver who died in the collision on the M62 in the early hours of Saturday.

Emergency services were called to the eastbound carriageway close to junction 29, for Lofthouse, at around 3.30am.

West Yorkshire Police said the crash involved a white Audi A3 “travelling against the flow of traffic” and a Renault HGV.

The male occupant of the Audi[1] was confirmed dead at the scene a short time later.

JTI Victor Street Masjid said Ali’s “untimely departure has left a profound void in our hearts”.

The Facebook post read: “We are truly devastated to hear about the sudden and tragic passing of Shahid Ali, son of Haji Muhammad Amin.

“Our hearts ache for Haji Amin and Haji Raja Nasim (uncle), who are regular attendees at JTI Victor Street Masjid.

“Shahid Ali was a cherished member of our close-knit community, and his untimely departure has left a profound void in our hearts.”

Police have urged anyone with any information on the crash to call 101 and quote reference 231 of March 3, 2024.
