Motherwell pensioner dies in hospital four days after being knocked down while crossing junction

A pensioner who was knocked down while crossing a road in Motherwell[1] on Sunday has died in hospital.

Emergency services[2] were called to the A721 Bellshill Road at the junction with Logans Road at around 9.10pm on Sunday, March 17, after a pedestrian was struck while crossing the road. A 68-year-old man was rushed to Queen Elizabeth University Hospital where he tragically died yesterday (Thursday March 21).

Officers[3] have now arrested the 24 year old driver of a white Ford Puma, which was struck from behind by a blue Vauxhall Corsa following the incident, in connection with an alleged road traffic offence. Enquiries are ongoing and police are appealing for anyone with information to come forward and assist with their investigation.

Sergeant Stewart Taylor from the Motherwell Road Policing Unit said: “Our thoughts are very much with the man’s family at this difficult time.

“We are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash and would ask anyone who has not yet come forward with information to get in touch with police.

“We’re also keen to hear from motorists with dash-cam footage from the area to come forward.

“If you believe you can assist our enquiries, please call 101, quoting incident 3420 of 17 March.”
