New speed cameras to be installed in Salford
New speed cameras are to be installed in Salford as part of a safety project in Greater Manchester.
New speed cameras are being installed across 25 routes in Salford and Greater Manchester as part of a comprehensive effort to create safer roads for residents.
There are eight possible locations in Salford for these new speed cameras. These include:
A57 Liverpool Road, Jct to Peel Green Road, Salford
A5185 Lancaster Road, North Radcliffe Park Road, Salford
A56 Bury New Road, North of New Hall Road, Salford
A57 Liverpool Rd, Argosy Drive, Salford
A575 Bolton Road, North of Thorpe Street, Walkden, Salford
A576 Eccles Old Road, Weaste Lane, Salford
A580 East Lancs Road outside Moorside High School, Swinton
A6 Broad Street, at Slip Road to Charles Street, Salford
Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) is spearheading this project by upgrading speed cameras in Salford with the latest generation of average speed systems.
These systems utilise advanced Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) technology provided by Jenoptik, a leading provider of safety camera solutions.

Superintendent Gareth Parkin from GMP’s Specialist Operations emphasizes the importance of these upgrades.
He said: “These speed camera upgrades across 25 routes in Greater Manchester are a fantastic improvement on road safety measures for all who live, work, and visit the area.”
Between 2020 and 2022, almost 600 people either lost their lives or were seriously injured in road incidents, prompting the need for enhanced safety measures.
Superintendent Gareth Parkin added: “Speeding represents one of the ‘fatal four’ that we focus on here in Greater Manchester, alongside drink and drug driving, using mobile devices behind the wheel and the non-wearing of seat belts.”
The new speed camera system is part of the Safety Camera Project, funded through the Mayor’s Challenge Fund and delivered by TfGM on behalf of the Safer Roads Greater Manchester Partnership.

She said: “Having an upgraded safety camera network that can measure spot speed and average speed to ensure that speeding drivers are detected and dealt with, is a vital part of helping realise Greater Manchester’s Vision Zero ambitions and make the region’s roads safer for everyone who uses them.”
Jenoptik have already installed over 260 permanent average speed systems across the UK. Research from the RAC Foundation[1] shows that average speed technology can lead to a reduction in injuries, including life-changing injuries, caused by road traffic collisions.
Their UK sales Director, John Piper said: “Independent research proves that average speed cameras have a significant effect on driver behaviour that makes roads safer.
“We thank Greater Manchester for putting their trust in us to deliver safety camera solutions which are a proven, fair, effective way to reduce dangerous driving on our roads and make them safer for responsible motorists and the general public.”
