Police issue update after woman killed on East Lancs Road

Police have confirmed a man who was arrested after a woman was killed on East Lancashire Road yesterday has been released on bail.

The woman – aged in her 30s – died of her injuries after being struck by a Vauxhall Insignia[1] at around 12.50am yesterday morning (Monday March 25). Police said she was a pedestrian. A 31-year-old man was arrested at the scene on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and was taken into custody for questioning.

In an update issued this morning (Tuesday), a Greater Manchester Police[2] spokesperson said he had since been released on bail while investigations continue, reports the Manchester Evening News[3].

Police said the car had been travelling towards Liverpool along the A580 when it collided with the woman. A stretch of the road between Lowton and Golborne was taped off for several hours as investigations were carried out by GMP’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit.

Following the woman’s tragic death ECHO[6] readers paid tribute[7] on Facebook[8]. Lisa Huo said: “Rest in peace my love, very sad to hear.”

Phil Stott said: “It’s heartbreaking to hear of such a young life being lost. Deepest condolences to the family.”

Ann Louise Starkie added: “Thoughts and prayers for her family and friends at this sad time.”

Readers also raised concerns about safety on that stretch of the East Lancashire Road. Carrie Leigh McLachlan said: “Isn’t it about time something was done around here? Seems every week someone sadly loses their life there.”
