Two teens dead and third fighting for life after crash with lorry

Two teenagers have died and a third was left fighting for his life after a horror crash with a lorry.

Both of the males, aged 17 and 19, who died were backseat passengers in the Vauxhall Corsa involved in the smash on Sunday.

The 17-year-old male driver was airlifted to Queen Elizabeth University Hospital, Glasgow[2], and was last night said to be in a critical condition.

A 17-year-old female, who was a front-seat passenger in the hatchback, was taken to the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh[3], but later released after treatment.

The lorry driver, a 29-year-old man, was arrested in connection with a road traffic offence and released pending further inquires. Police Scotland said he was not injured.

The A91 in Stirling, between the Bannockburn Interchange and Greencornhills Roundabout, was shut for 11 hours after the fatal accident at around 3.50pm.

Ambulance crews, firefighters, police and the air ambulance attended the accident on the A91 near the Bannockburn interchange in Stirling. Ambulance crews, firefighters, police and the air ambulance attended the accident on the A91 near the Bannockburn interchange in Stirling.

Stephanie McNib was travelling from Glasgow when she passed through the interchange around 40 minutes later.

She said: ‘As I got round the roundabout I had never seen so many blue lights and emergency service vehicles.

‘I could see three fire engines, five or six police or more, three or four ambulances and there was an air ambulance helicopter in the field.

‘It was very bad, my thoughts are with the families.’ Crash scene investigators scoured the site for any clues as to what caused the horrific accident and have urged drivers who witnessed the crash to contact them.

Road Policing Sergeant Elaine Scott said last night: ‘My thoughts are with everyone involved in this incident and their families and friends at this difficult time.

‘We will continue to offer support as our investigation progresses. It’s vital we establish exactly what happened here and I’m appealing to anyone who saw the crash, or either vehicle prior to it, to contact us.

‘Regardless of how significant you believe the information you have is, we want to hear from you.’

She added: ‘I’d ask drivers with dashcam footage of the area around the time to please review this and bring anything of significance to our attention.’

There are heightened concerns about road safety in the area.

Evelyn Tweed, Nationalist MSP for Stirling, said: ‘I am deeply saddened to hear that two young men have died following [the] accident at Bannockburn.

‘Unfortunately we have now seen several deaths on Stirling’s roads in recent weeks.’

Ms Tweed said she has written to the Scottish Government to ‘establish what support is available to improve road safety’.

Sunday’s tragedy is the latest deadly road accident in the area.

Earlier this month pedestrian Helen Sinclair, 65, died when she was hit by a Volkswagen Tiguan near Stirling’s Blackgrange Roundabout on the A907.

The road was closed for around eight hours after the fatality.

Ms Sinclair’s family said they were ‘devastated following our tragic loss’ and wanted to‘express thanks to everyone who was there at the incident and gave assistance’.

And Jonathan Marshall Watson, of Buchany, Stirlingshire, died in February following a crash on the A84 near Stirling.

The 48-year-old had been driving an Audi A3 when it crashed on the Doune to Stirling road. His family paid tribute to the ‘keen musician and astrophile’.

A spokesman for Transport Scotland said its ‘sympathies are with family and friends at this difficult time’ following Sunday’s double tragedy.

He added: ‘As the police investigation into this accident is ongoing, it would be inappropriate to comment further at this time.’
