Drive-by ‘shooting’ on M5 during road-rage incident in West Country

A man has been arrested following a road-rage incident on the M5, during which a projectile was discharged from an ‘air weapon’. The incident occurred on the northbound carriageway between junctions 28 and 27, near Cullompton in Devon[1], at approximately 10.10am on Wednesday, April 17, according to Devon and Cornwall Police.

The victim’s vehicle was rapidly approached from behind by a silver Mercedes van that undertook him and cut in front. The van driver is alleged to have sworn at the victim before later pulling up alongside his vehicle

The police reported that a projectile was subsequently fired from the van at the victim’s car, causing damage. It is suspected that the projectile may have been a ball-bearing-type object launched from an air weapon, reports Devon Live.[2]

A man, aged in his 30s and from the Exeter[5] area, has been arrested on suspicion of possession of an imitation firearm with intent to cause another to fear unlawful violence. He has been released on police bail while enquiries continue.

Devon and Cornwall Police said: “Officers investigating the incident are appealing for any witnesses, or motorists in the area at the time with relevant dashcam footage, to come forward. Contact police via our website here[6] or by calling 101 quoting log 211 of 17/04/24

“Alternatively, independent charity Crimestoppers can be contacted anonymously online here[7] or by calling freephone 0800 555111.”
