GAA pay tribute to Ryan Straney after tragic death in Sydney road accident

Antrim GAA has led tributes to a young Belfast man, who tragically lost his life in a road accident in Sydney on Monday.

Ryan Straney, 27, died in the the incident, described as a “tragic accident”, which occurred when a 96-year-old man reportedly drove south in the northbound lane of Sydney’s M1 Pacific Motorway around 4.40 am local time.

His vehicle collided with three northbound vehicles, one of which contained the young West Belfast[1] man, who sadly died at the scene. The elderly driver was taken to Royal North Shore Hospital for mandatory testing and treatment of minor injuries.

A 35-year-old truck driver and a 39-year-old male driver were also taken to hospital for mandatory testing and minor injuries. New South Wales Police have launched an investigation into the crash.

A spokesperson said: “An investigation has commenced into the circumstances surrounding the crash.”

“A report will be prepared with the information of the Coroner.”

Ryan, was a senior footballer with Lamh Dhearg GAC in West Belfast[4] and a beloved member of the community. Antrim GAA[5] expressed their condolences: “We would like to pass on our sincere condolences to Lamh Dhearg CLG and the entire community on the shock passing of Ryan Straney.”

They added: “Ryan was a member of their Senior Football team and has been in Australia. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends at this deeply sad time.”, reports the Irish Mirror[6].

Ryan was remembered as the “beloved son of Vincent and Sharon, loving brother to Declan and Calum, and a cherished grandson of Geordie and Theresa. He will be sadly missed by his wider family circle and friends at home and abroad.”

In an online tribute, Ryan was remembered as “a multi-talented dual player who was always dedicated to improving his craft in which he enjoyed much success at the club over the years.”

Funeral details are expected to be released in due course.
