Gridlock chaos on A66 after crash between truck and Toyota Yaris – as woman freed from vehicle

Drivers were caught up in gridlock chaos on Tuesday morning after a crashbetween a truck and a Toyota Yaris.

The A66 was closed after the two-vehicle smash near Teesside Park. Emergency services were seen dealing with the incident on the westbound carriageway as a woman was freed from her vehicle by firefighters.

In an update on Twitter, a Cleveland Fire Brigade[1] spokesperson said: “We are currently, April 2, 2024 at 11:59am, dealing with a road traffic collision A66[2] west bound near Teesside park .There are three fire engines attending . Please avoid area if you can.”

Drivers reported long delays with one witness saying he had not moved in 30 minutes. He said: “Not moving at all. Four fire engines and two ambulances have squeezed past. Not moved an inch for over half an hour.”

A Cleveland Police[3] spokesperson said: “The A66 west bound is closed near Teesside Park due to a collision. Emergency services are at the scene. Please avoid the area and use alternative routes.”

The incident was first reported at 10.19am, according to the AA. A spokesperson said: “Road closed and long delays due to crash on A66 Westbound between A19[4] and Teesside Park Drive (Teeside Park Shopping Park). Congestion to Cannon Park Interchange, A19 Portrack Interchange.

“Delays of five minutes and delays increasing on A19 Southbound between A139 ( Norton[5] Interchange) and A1130 Levick Crescent (Mandale Interchange). Average speed 15 mph.”

Police have now confirmed the road has now reopened and the vehicles recovered, a spokesperson said: “A road has now reopened after a collision around 11am on the A66 westbound, close to Teesside Park.

“A woman was extracted from a Toyota Yaris by the Fire Brigade, but is not believed to be seriously injured. We’d like to thank motorists for their patience.”
