M5 traffic chaos after lorry collides with bridge near Oldbury
Drivers were stuck in gridlock traffic on the M5 northbound[1] this afternoon (April 5) after a lorry crashed into a motorway bridge. The crash happened near Oldbury’s Birchley Island[2] which was shut until at least 5.30pm.
Heavy traffic was reported near J1, J2 and J3 of the major motorway. It was not clear at time of publication if emergency services responded to the incident.
Traffic website Inrix reported earlier today: “A4123 Wolverhampton Road Eastbound blocked. Queueing traffic due to bridge struck by vehicle at J2 near Oldbury[3] and Dudley[4].

“Congestion to routes across Oldbury. The northern section of the roundabout is closed after a lorry carrying a digger collided with the M5 bridge.”
West Midlands Roads wrote on social media platform X at 3.35pm: “M5 northbound between J3, Quinton, and M6. Heavy congestion.
“Congestion also on the motorway island at J1 for West Brom – gridlocking the approaches.” An update at 5.43pm read: “Heavy congestion remains with gridlock remaining around the J1 island.
“Surrounding routes including Trinity Way, The Expressway, Kenrick Way also congested. Delays to 74 bus route. Congestion also visible at J2 Birchley Island, Oldbury.”
