M6 closed after horror lorry crash leaves mud and fuel spilled across entire road
Drivers have been warned of lengthy delays after an HGV overturned along a busy motorway.
The M6 in Cumbria was closed northbound J39 (Shap) and J40 (Penrith) following a collision involving a heavy goods vehicle that then overturned and stopped on the central reservation barrier. The crash resulted in mud being spread across the carriageway as well as a large amount of fuel being spilled.
Cumbria Police and National Highways officers are in the process of releasing caught traffic. An investigation into the crash is ongoing. The Mirror[1] has contacted Cumbria Constabulary for comment.

“The M6 in Cumbria is closed northbound between J39 (Shap) and J40 (Penrith) due to a collision involving a heavy goods vehicle that has overturned and has come to rest on the central reservation barrier,” a National Highways spokesperson said. “This has resulted in mud being spread across the carriageway, along with a large fuel spillage.”
National Highways added Lane 3 (of 3) was also closed on the southbound carriage between J40 and J39. Police investigations are ongoing.
Following an investigation, recovery, clean up and barrier repair will be carried out. National Highways urged drivers to wait until they are informed about better traffic flow.
“Along with this collision, there is another collision which happened earlier on this morning on the M6 at J39, this also involved a heavy goods vehicle,” a spokesperson continued. “The vehicle crossed over from the northbound carriageway onto the southbound and came to rest on the northbound entry slip road at J39. There are delays on approach to J39, please allow extra time for your journey.”

Drivers are advised to use the following diversion route to continue their journey:
- Exit the M6 at J39 and turn left onto the B6261 westbound.
- Turn right at the junction B6261/A6 and head northbound.
- Continue north on the A6 through Shap, Hackthorpe, Clifton and Eamont Bridge.
- At Kemplay Bank roundabout take the first exit onto the A66 westbound and then re-join the M6 at J40.
According to the UK government[3], there were 136,002 vehicle crash casualties of all severities in 2022, a decline of 11 per cent compared to 2019. It added in 2022, 75 per cent of fatalities and 62% of casualties of all severities were male
