Multi-vehicle M23 crash sees six people rushed to hospital as air ambulance called

Six people have been taken to hospital after a “serious multi-vehicle collision” on the M23 that saw an air ambulance called to the scene. The crash was first reported around 11.45am on Thursday (April 18) and involved a minibus, a people carrier, and a HGV.

Complex recovery was needed following the incident which is said to have caused “extensive” damage to barriers on the road, according to travel service Inrix. National Highways confirmed traffic officers and recovery agents remained at the scene with lane closures in place for some time afterwards.

A spokesperson for South East Coast Ambulance Service said it had been called to reports of a collision on the M23[1] shortly after 11.30am. They confirmed multiple people had been taken to hospital for further treatment.

The M23 northbound between Junctions 9 and 8 was shut for nearly three hours on Thursday afternoon. Traffic was also held[4] on the southbound carriageway for up to an hour while an air ambulance was in attendance.
