A50 live updates as lorry fire closes busy stretch of major road

A lorry fire has led to the closure of a major Derbyshire road[1] this morning (Friday, May 24). The A50 is closed westbound between the A38 Toyota Island and the A516 near Hilton.

National Highways said appliances from Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service had been called to the scene. An eyewitness said there was at least two miles of queuing traffic.

A diversion[2] route is in operation. The route is as follows:

  • Exit the A50 and take the 5th exit on to the A38 towards Mickleover
  • Take the exit signposted ‘M1 South, Derby, Nottingham, A516’
  • At ‘Hospital Island’ take the 5th exit and rejoin the A38
  • Merge on to the A516 and travel along this road towards Burntheath/Hilton
  • Rejoin the A50 westbound

National Highways urged motorists to expect delays and allow extra time for their journeys. Traffic[3] monitoring system Inrix also showed long delays in the area and on the diversion routes.
