Emergency services were called to the westbound carriageway between Moorgate Road and the slip road for the M57 at Kirkby.

The bin lorry driver is helping police with inquiries, the force said.

Det Sgt Andy Roper said: “Our thoughts are with the man’s family, who must be understandably devastated by what has happened.”

He urged anyone who was travelling in the area at the time and had dashcam footage to get in touch.

The east and westbound carriageways of East Lancashire Road remains closed while investigation work is carried out.

Motorists have been advised to avoid the area.
