‘Fireball’ HGV near Coventry as 999 crews race to M6

This dramatic image shows a ‘fireball’ on the M6 near Coventry[1] as flames tear through a HGV. Police, firefighters and National Highways officers raced to the scene on the M6[2] between junction one and two in the early hours of this morning (May 9).

Warwickshire[3] Police’s Operational Patrol Unit (OPU) shared the image on its page on Facebook. They said that they worked with Warwickshire Fire and Rescue Service and National Highways: West Midlands to deal with the incident.

“Fortunately no one was injured in this incident,” the team said. The HGV had to be recovered from the stretch of motorway.

But they issued a word of warning to motorists following the fire, saying: “Can we take this moment to remind motorists and professional users of the motorway that the hard shoulder is not to be used during these incidents as it hinders the emergency response. Thank you.”
