‘Serious crash’ closes A41 as HGV spills load on carriageway

The A41 in Whitchurch remains closed today following a ‘serious accident’ on Saturday (May 18).

The crash, which happened at around 1pm, involved a heavy goods vehicle which had crashed onto its side and spilled grain over the carriageway.

Emergency services including fire crews from Whitchurch, Hodnet, Wellington and Wem, as well as police officers and paramedics were all sent to the scene near to the Prees Heath roundabout where the A41 joins the A49.

The condition of the driver is not known at this time.

A spokesman for Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service gave detail of the incident. They said: “At 1.12pm on Saturday, 18 May, 2024, SFRS Fire Control received a call reporting that a Road Traffic Collision had taken place in Prees Heath.

“[The] RTC involved one articulated lorry on its side with grain spilled on the carriageway in both directions. No persons trapped and Highways attending to clear carriageway.

“Four fire appliances including the Rescue Tender were mobilised from Hodnet, Wellington, Wem and Whitchurch. An Operations officer was in attendance.

“Also at the scene of the incident were: the Highways Agency, the Land Ambulance Service and the Police.”

The road was closed for sometime on Saturday while the scene was cleared. The road is again closed today (May 19) due to ‘crash investigation work’.

According to traffic moonitoring service INRIX, the “road is closed due to crash investigation work on A41 Southbound between B5395 Heath Road and A49 (Prees Heath roundabout) following a serious accident at lunchtime on Saturday.”
