The M27 was closed last night: this is why

The M27 was closed last night for emergency barrier repairs following a serious crash on Saturday.

According to National Highways, the westbound carriageway between junctions 5 for Southampton[1] Airport and 8 for Bursledon were shut between 9.45pm yesterday and 12.45am today.

This was due to damage which occurred during a serious crash on Saturday evening[2].

As previously reported, a van was allegedly driven the wrong way down the M27, causing three vehicles to collide and with one passenger suffering a fractured ankle.

The van then collided with a police car heading to another job – with eyewitnesses posting on X saying the police car looked ‘smashed up’.

A 55-year-old man from Southampton was arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving and driving a vehicle while unfit through drugs.

He was released under investigation while police continue their enquiries.

Witnesses can report information or footage to police, quoting 44240187340.
