Trucker in hospital after being ‘hit by car’ as ‘altercation’ shuts A500

Police arrested a motorist after a truck driver was ‘struck’ by car during a row which left the A500 in South Cheshire shut for more than three hours. And the lorry driver was taken to hospital following Friday’s altercation on the stretch through Shavington.

CheshireLive reported at the time[1] how the stretch had been ‘blocked’ in both directions before just the westbound carriageway remained closed. Drivers stuck in the closure reported being turned around from the scene as nearby roads were all left congested.

Today Cheshire Police has confirmed officers were called to an ‘incident’ on the Shavington Bypass at around 4.45pm on May 17. Cops say they found there had been an ‘altercation’ between the HGV driver and the driver of a black Mercedes.

But during the row the trucker, a 53-year-old man, of Bradford, was allegedly struck by the Mercedes. While the HGV driver was taken to the Royal Stoke University Hospital, the Mercedes driver, a 53-year-old man, of Wybunbury was arrested on suspicion of assault.

The road remained shut until around 8.15pm. The force has today urged any witnesses to contact the constabulary as an investigation continues.

A spokesman said: “On Friday police were called to reports of an incident on the A500 Shavington Bypass, Crewe[4]. Officers attended the scene and on arrival they found there had been an altercation between the driver of an HGV and the driver of a black Mercedes.

“During the incident, the driver of the HGV, a 53-year-old man from Bradford, was struck by the Mercedes and sustained minor injuries. He was taken to Royal Stoke Hospital.

“The driver of the Mercedes, a 53-year-old man from Wybunbury, was arrested at the scene. He has since been released under investigation pending further enquiries.”
