The large rock was thrown from a pedestrian bridge over the A66 onto the carriageway on Tuesday (May 7) afternoon hitting his skip truck.
It happened near West Lane and Barnaby Avenue in Middlesbrough at about 2.20pm.
The rock smashed the windscreen leaving it undrivable and needing to be recovered.
The driver luckily walked away uninjured but was left “shaken and disturbed” by the incident, police said.
