Victims of tragic weekend crashes on M50 and Dame Street named

A 42-year-old motorcyclist who was killed in a horrific crash involving a lorry on the M50 on Friday has been named locally.

Derek Martin was from north Dublin and worked at Wheatfield Prison. He was pronounced dead at the scene after his motorbike collided with a truck between the Liffey Valley and Castleknock junctions of the motorway.

The driver of the lorry, who is aged in his 50s, was taken to hospital following the accident but his injuries are not believed to be serious. A large section of the motorway was closed for several hours as a result of the collision[1] on Friday, causing significant delays around the city.

Gardaí have issued an appeal for witnesses in relation to the incident, asking any motorists with dash-cam footage from the M50[4] around the time it occurred to make it available to investigators.

Meanwhile, the victim of a separate collision that occurred in Dublin[5] city centre at the weekend has also been named locally as Peter Murphy from Crumlin. The 62-year-old died when his bicycle collided with a taxi around 5.30am on Saturday morning on Dame Street.

It is understood that Mr Murphy had been travelling in the same direction as the taxi towards College Green prior to the collision. He was taken to St. James’s Hospital by ambulance, and was subsequently pronounced deceased.

The latest tragedies mean 76 people have been killed on the roads this year. Nine motorcyclists and five cyclists have died since January, according to Dublin Live[6]. The victims include 28 drivers, 20 passengers, and 14 pedestrians.

Anyone with any information in relation to the crash on the M50 can contact An Garda Síochána[7] by calling Blanchardstown Garda Station on 01 666 7000, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any Garda Station.
