A woman has died and four people are seriously injured following a two-vehicle crash on the A9 last night.

The injured are being treated in hospital in Inverness.

Road policing officers are appealing for information following the crash near Carrbridge.

At around 10.15pm, a Volkswagen Multivan and a Toyota Hilux were involved in the collision.

A 65-year-old woman who was a passenger in the Volkswagen was pronounced dead at the scene.

A 33-year-old woman and a 39-year-old man who were passengers in the Volkswagen, and the 64-year-old male driver were taken by ambulance to Raigmore Hospital where hospital staff described their condition as “serious”.

The 51-year-old male driver of the Toyota was also taken by ambulance to Raigmore Hospital where he too is described as “serious”.

The road was closed while crash investigations were carried out and fully reopened at around 5.50am today.

Inquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances and officers are appealing for information.

Road policing Sergeant Calum MacAulay said: “Our thoughts are with the family and friends of the woman who died at this very difficult time.

“As our inquiries continue, I’d appeal to anyone with information to come forward. I’d be particularly keen to speak to anyone who saw what happened or has dashcam footage of the area around the time.”
