An investigation is underway after multiple firefighters were dispatched from Inverness to Skye “under blue light conditions”[2] when they collided with a commercial van.
The fire engine from Inverness was heading to Dunvegan, a village in Skye, after they were called to an animal rescue emergency at around 19.41pm on Sunday, May 26, regarding a cow stranded in a gorge.
The crash happened on the A890 at Mammit Hill, near Strathcarron.
Four firefighters were taken to Raigmore Hospital in Inverness where three have been discharged and one remains hospitalised. The van driver suffered minor injuries.
Additional appliances were mobilised from Portee and Uig after the crash to attend to the original 999 emergency call in Skye.
Area commander Michael Humphreys is the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service’s local senior officer for Highland. He said: “One male firefighter remains in a stable condition in hospital following a road traffic collision involving a fire appliance on Sunday, 26 May.
“Three other firefighters involved have now been discharged from hospital and all staff are being fully supported.
“A joint investigation with the Fire Brigade Union into the incident is now underway.”
