National Highways said the lorry has struck the central reservation and hit a bridge support about a mile from J9.
Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue Service said: “Thankfully nobody was seriously injured and the driver is now in the care of South Central Ambulance Service.”
The fire service added the northbound carriageway would “remain closed for the foreseeable future” whilst essential repairs are carried out on the carriageway.
Delays of over an hour have been reported in both directions of the M40 approaching Bicester.
