Person freed from vehicle after serious crash near Devon border

A person has been freed from a vehicle after a serious crash on the A303 in Somerset on Sunday evening (June 16), around 50 miles from the Devon border.

Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue[1] Service confirmed fire crews were called to the two-car crash at around 6.57pm in Ilminster. Three fire engines and a heavy rescue unit were all sent to a report of a road traffic collision involving one car and one small truck on the A303 near Ilminster.

A fire spokesperson said: “One person was still trapped in one of the vehicles, so crews used hydraulic cutting equipment to release the casualty and hand them over to the Ambulance crews.” The conditions of those involved in the collision is not yet known.

National Highways has been providing updates on the closure, between the A358 at Southfields roundabout and the B3170 at Marsh.

A National Highways spokesperson said: “The A303 is closed westbound between the A358 (Horton Cross, Ilminster) and B3170 (Marsh), due to a serious collision involving two cars. All emergency services are on scene with Avon and Somerset Police managing the incident.

“If this closure impacts on your planned route, please allow extra journey time. Plan ahead, you may wish to re-route or even delay your journey.”

A diversion route is in place, with drivers advised to follow the Solid Triangle diversion symbol on road signs. The diversion is listed below:

  • At the Southfields roundabout take the A358 signposted Donyatt/Broadway/Horton.
  • Follow the A358 to Chard.
  • At the junction with the A30 Fore Street, turn right onto the A30.
  • Follow the A30 through Crawley and Yarcombe to the A303.
  • Re-join the A303 westbound.
