The busy Midlands road where average speed cameras catch the most drivers
The location of average speed cameras which catch most drivers in the West Midlands has been revealed – as drivers were warned this is the place they are most likely to be fined. These average speed cameras have racked up by far the highest number of victims of any in our region.
A huge 2,275 were captured speeding southbound on the A4444 Black Country New Road, between The Lunt Junction and Moxley Junction, near Bilston, Wolverhampton, in the first half of this year. Another 700 were caught heading in the opposite direction.
The total was much higher than the next average speed camera location, which was the A4148 Broadway in Walsall[1], with 1,756. Those were the only two locations where total recorded incidents were over 1,000. Details were revealed following a freedom of information request to West Midlands Police[2] by BirminghamLive.

They also showed variable speed cameras operating at two locations on the M6 had caught out over 9,000 motorists since the start of 2024. These cameras usually operate during periods when temporary speeds are in place on the motorway at times of congestion or poor weather.
These cameras operate between Junctions 7 and 8 at Great Barr and between the M54 slip road and Junction 10 for Walsall. But average speed cameras run at all times and are in place on a number of busy roads across the region.

We work with communities and partners, including local councils, charities and the West Midlands Combined Authority to achieve safer roads for everyone.
“Our proactive approach involves focused operations in key areas, tackling the ‘fatal four’ (speeding, drink/drug driving, using a mobile and not wearing a seatbelt) and preventing harm to the most vulnerable road users.”
