Driver suffers life-changing injuries in M5 crash caused by loose tyre

A driver was airlifted to hospital after a serious crash on the M5[1] in Devon. He sustained life-threatening injuries in the collision on the northbound carriageway near Exeter[2] on Friday afternoon, July 12, after a car lost its tyre while travelling along the road[3].

The crash took place at around 2.25pm on Friday last week and closed the motorway in both directions[4] while emergency services arrived at the scene. Devon and Cornwall Police say the collision involved a blue Vauxhall Astra, a black Skoda Octavia and a white Iveco Daily van. Both people inside the Skoda sustained injuries.

The male driver, 33, was airlifted by Air Ambulance to Derriford Hospital[5] with injuries believed to be life-changing. A 50-year-old male passenger was taken to Royal Devon & Exeter Hospital with minor injuries. The driver of the Vauxhall was checked over by paramedics at the scene but didn’t require hospital treatment
