M5 crash caused by loose tyre leaves man with life-changing injuries

A man has suffered life-threatening injuries following a serious crash on the M5. He sustained life-changing injuries in the collision on the northbound carriageway on Friday afternoon after a car lost its tyre while travelling along the road[1].

The crash took place at around 2.25pm on Friday last week and closed the motorway in both directions[2] while emergency services arrived at the scene. The road was closed northbound until around 11pm[3], according to National Highways,

Devon and Cornwall Police say the collision involved a blue Vauxhall Astra, a black Skoda Octavia and a white Iveco Daily van. Both people inside the Skoda sustained injuries, as DevonLive reports.[4]

The male driver, 33, of the Skoda, was airlifted by Air Ambulance to Derriford Hospital[7] with injuries believed to be life-changing. A 50-year-old male passenger was taken to Royal Devon & Exeter Hospital with minor injuries. The driver of the Vauxhall was checked over by paramedics at the scene but didn’t require hospital treatment

Devon and Cornwall Police is now appealing anyone who witnessed the crash and has not already spoken to police to get in contact. In an update give today (Monday, July 15) the force said: “Officers are appealing for any witnesses that have not already spoken to them, but who may have seen the collision, or have dash camera footage, to contact police via 101 quoting Occurrence 50240172723.”

Danes Castle Fire Station also thanked members of the public last week for their assistance at the scene of the crash. In a post on social media, the station wrote: “We wanted to express our thanks to all of the members of the public who assisted us at a road traffic collision on the M5 motorway this afternoon.

“Crews from Green Watch Danes Castle were already on the southbound carriageway following a previous incident when the accident occurred a short distance in-front of us.

“Thank you also to crews from Middlemoor, Cullompton[8] & Tiverton[9] who backed us up as well as the police, ambulance and air ambulance crews who very quickly attended the scene. We wish all of the people involved a full and speedy recovery.”
