M5 diversion route in full after serious crash shuts motorway
Drivers are being diverted around a serious crash on the M5 in Somerset. The motorway has been closed in both directions after a collision which has reportedly involved a van between junctions 23 and 24.
The collision, which National Highways described as ‘serious’, was first reported at around 10.30am today. Drivers already face delays of around 45 minutes in the area and traffic remains trapped within the road closure.
National Highways said: “The #M5[1] is now closed both directions between J23 #Dunball[2] and J24 #Bridgwater[3]. Traffic caught within the closures will be dealt with as soon as possible by Police and National Highways traffic officers. There are 45 minute delays northbound.”
Traffic is being directed off the M5 at J23 by a solid square traffic symbol. Drivers should head to the A39 and take the A38 Bristol Road at the Dunball roundabout, before rejoining the M5 at J24.
Highways has also warned of possible delays throughout the day and has advised motorists to plan ahead and potentially delay their journey until the road has cleared. Traffic monitor Inrix reports: “M5 Southbound closed, queueing traffic due to serious accident, a van involved from J23 A39 (Bridgwater North) to J24 A38 Taunton Road (Bridgwater South).
“Camera shows southbound has been closed with traffic coming off the exit slip, Northbound remains held, since around 10:30am.”
