No start date yet for A82 average speed camera campaign
Work to install average speed cameras on a notorious stretch of the A82 will not start until July 2, Transport Scotland confirmed this week.
The cameras for the trunk road near Luss were announced four weeks ago, with police saying they would improve safety during the holiday period.
A statement from Transport Scotland said that live operation would ‘start this summer and continue until traffic levels return to post-summer volumes’.
The location was said to have been chosen because of ‘increased traffic volumes and issues with speeding during the summer period’.
But this week a spokesperson said work to install the system would start on Monday July 22 and no date was available for when the cameras would start to operate.
Most English schools will break up on July 24, while pupils will return to school in Glasgow and Argyll & Bute on August 14.
The low-carbon fuelled average speed cameras will also be installed on the A836, between Reay and Thurso.
And 14 new electric safety camera vans were also announced across Scotland.
Chief Inspector Mark Patterson, of Police Scotland’s road policing unit, said last month: “With the expected increase in traffic volume over the upcoming holiday period, the implementation of these new temporary average speed cameras are part of a crucial partnership response to improving road safety.”
And Cabinet Secretary for Transport Fiona Hyslop said: “Road safety is one of the Scottish Government’s top priorities and I remain resolute in my determination to save lives on the country’s roads.
“The deployment of temporary average speed cameras on the A836 and A82 will help us achieve that.
“Both locations see a significant rise in traffic over the summer months and persistent speeding cases.”
