Police give update months after Jaguar boxed in on M62

An update has been issued after police were forced to use specialist tactics to ram and block a Jaguar between cars on the M62[1] earlier this year.

On March 6 earlier this year officers from Merseyside Police[2] and Greater Manchester Police needed to use specialist tactics to ram the Jaguar I-PACE and block it between a number of police vehicles, to eventually bring the car to a stop. Pictures from the scene show the black vehicle wedged in between two Matrix vehicles from Merseyside Police between J11 for Birchwood and J12 for Eccles.

Merseyside Police, who is leading the investigation, previously announced: “”An investigation, supported by the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA), is underway and a 31-year-old man from Bolton has been arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving and causing a public nuisance.”

This came after claims were made that the brakes had failed on the electric car and the driver was unable to stop the vehicle on the busy motorway. The force has now confirmed the man was released under investigation, with the case appearing to be more complex than initially reported.

In a statement at the time, a Jaguar Land Rover[5] spokesperson said: “Following a detailed investigation in partnership with the Merseyside Police and other authorities, we understand an individual has been arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving and causing a public nuisance, relating to the incident on the M62 on Wednesday, March 6th.

“JLR seeks to investigate all reports of issues relating to product safety and will continue to co-operate with Merseyside Police and the Driver & Vehicle Standards Agency where required.”
