Speed camera back on Conwy coastal road where drivers kept getting fined for breaking 20mph limit
A speed camera is back on the 20mph coastal road where drivers kept getting pinged earlier this year. Go Safe has added some extra locations this week to its sites for speed cameras.
These include a number on 20mph roads across the region. They are in addition to these sites reported on earlier this month.[1]
Drivers may want to beware that one site is the place where 114 motorists were caught speeding in a single month – out of a total of just over 260 across the region. North Wales Live went to road test the route to find out why so many were being pinged.[2][3]
The road is Glan-y-Mor in Penrhyn Bay – which runs between Llandudno[4] and Colwyn Bay[5]/Rhos-on-Sea. After racking up the fines in April it was then not on the list of roads enforced by Go Safe in May and June.
But it is now one of a number of locations in the region added in the last few days. (full list below).
A major review of 20mph roads is being carried out and Go Safe had said it was working “closely with our partners in Local Authorities across Wales to ensure that we avoid establishing enforcement sites on roads that are likely to be reviewed”. This may indicate that these roads won’t be changed under the review but nothing has been confirmed either way.
Since enforcement started 11,065 fines have been dished out in south and mid Wales. In North Wales the total figure is 1,787.
This gives a Welsh total of 12,852 fines in total since enforcement started. Even if everyone received the minimum fine of £100 then it means drivers have been hit with £1,285,200 in fines since 20mph was introduced.
This money goes to the UK Treasury rather Welsh Government who implemented the default 20mph limit.
