The location of 20mph speed cameras in North Wales in July as pause at certain locations

There has been a rapid increase in fines handed out due to speeding offences on 20mph roads in Wales in recent months. Enforcement was stepped up by Go Safe towards the end of March – six months after the new limit was introduced.

The following month 251 speeding fines were issued on 20mph roads in North Wales. This spiralled to 636 in May – with 4,286 across the whole of Wales.

It shows that road safety chiefs are getting serious about enforcing the new limit. But changes are also afoot with plans to change guidance to local authorities which is likely to lead to a significant increase in exception roads that will revert to 30mph.

In light of this Go Safe has said it was working with councils to avoid enforcing roads – or sections of highways – which are likely to be reviewed.

Go Safe said: “The Welsh Government have established an independent panel to review the exceptions criteria for highways authorities when deciding whether or not the speed limit on a road should be 20mph. This review process may result in Local Highways Authorities reviewing the speed limit on some roads.

“We are working closely with our partners in Local Authorities across Wales to ensure that we avoid establishing enforcement sites on roads that are likely to be reviewed.”

Go Safe have a camera map that lists where the mobile speed cameras will be placed each month. A last majority are placed outside schools – areas nearly everyone agrees should have 20mph limits.
