Trapped M6 trucker freed from overturned car transporter amid five-mile tailbacks

Firefighters freed a trapped lorry driver after a car transporter overturned on the M6 today, Thursday, July 25. The incident caused widespread motorway disruption for motorists with five-miles of tailbacks.

National Highways West Midlands said the lorry overturned and came to rest on its side between J4A, for the M42, and J4, for Birmingham[1], on the southbound carriageway. One person was freed from the lorry cab by fire crews and was assessed by paramedics.

Two of three lanes were closed to allow the lorry’s recovery. Delays of an hour later reduced to 30 minutes.

Taking to X, National Highways West Midlands posted a thread about the crash. It said: “Traffic is currently being held on the #M6 southbound between J4A ( #M42 ) and J4 following a lorry that has overturned and come to rest on its side. Please consider alternative routes, delays are building on approach.

“Traffic has been released on the M6 southbound between J4A ( #M42 ) and J4. 2 (of 3) lanes will remain closed due to the overturned lorry. Long delays of up to 45 minutes on approach. Approx. 5 miles of congestion. Please allow extra journey time.

“Delays of up to 1 hour on the #M6 southbound between J4A ( #M42 ) and J4 following the overturned lorry. Approx. 5 miles of congestion past J5. @WestMidsFire remain on scene.

“Recovery is underway on the #M6 southbound between J4A ( #M42 ) and J4 following the overturned car transporter. 2 (of 3) lanes remain closed. Please add an extra 30 minutes on to your current journey time, approx. 4 miles of congestion.

Warwickshire[3] Fire and Rescue Service added: “Fire engines from Coleshill @WMFSErdington and @WMFSAston have attended an overturned lorry on the M6 between Junctions 4a and 4. One person was extricated from the lorry cab by fire and ambulance crews.”
