Truth behind ‘new’ M57 speed camera’ that caught ‘160 people in an hour’
Online claims that a new speed camera had been installed on the M57 – and had already caught out more than 100 careless drivers – have been confirmed as baseless rumours.
A Facebook[1] post claiming a speed camera had gone live “somewhere in the transition zones between the 50mph and 40mph speed limits as you approach Switch Island” was shared more than 600 times in just five hours. One person said: “It is live it’s nabbed 160 people in the 1st hour”, while another complained: “Another tax on workers.”
But National Highways said no such speed camera exists. A spokesman said: “We can now clarify that there have been no enforcement cameras installed.”
Several drivers had voiced their own suspicions that the rumours were unfounded, with one dad saying: “I take my daughter to school everyday that way! Seen posts today and purposely drove back to look. Nothing there at all. They can’t hide cameras and if it’s permanent they have to put lines on the road and camera signs up.”
Another man said: “Just did two trips past here on both sides… there are no cameras here anywhere and no speed camera signs before the 50mph zone.”
A number of other people took to social media to comment on the state of the traffic on the motorway. Robert Hodgkinson said: “(To be fair) you have plenty doing 80 right through them signs till they hit the lights, I think the whole ‘Switch Island’ and motorway endings need changing. Might (have) been worth bringing the 50mph sign further up the motorway to allow drivers to check their speed and slow down.”
Francis Kelly said: “Speed is not a problem, it’s people going through the red lights. So they will just go through at 50 now instead.”
