Traffic was held on the M25 clockwise between junction 29 for Upminster, across the Dartford Crossing to the A282 junction 1B for Dartford.

It allowed for emergency services, including the air ambulance, to work at the scene.

Drivers were experiencing delays of more than two hours this evening, with 11 miles of congestion reported at one stage.

National Highways warned the road was expected to remain closed for “some time”.

Those heading clockwise that were caught within the closure were released when it was safe to do so.

As of 8.30pm, the section of the motorway had reopened but one lane of four remained shut.

Anti-clockwise traffic was also held for almost an hour to allow for the air ambulance to land. All lanes have since reopened.

Police have confirmed they were called at about 4pm.

A spokesman added: “Officers attended and one woman has been taken to a London hospital for treatment.
