Driver reversing up M5 slip road caught on dashcam
Dashcam footage has captured the moment a driver, seemingly with a death wish, reversed back up a slip road on the M5[1] to avoid a queue. The video was taken at the M5 junction for Weston-super-Mare[2] by a motorists making their way around the roundabout.
As the driver exits the roundabout onto the motorway, a white Hyundai can be seen reversing back up the slipway towards the roundabout. Posting the video to an M5 traffic group, the motorist commented, sarcastically: “Some heroic driving from this person yesterday.
“Reversing up the slip road at Weston because they didn’t want to sit in 30 seconds worth of traffic,” the posted continued. They added the incident had been reported to police.
The incident took place on Thursday, August 8, the poster said. The post, shared in SomersetLive’s M5 Traffic and Travel Facebook group[3] has been seen by more than 9,000 people, according to Facebook’s metrics.
Commenters in the group shared their disbelief at the dangerous action. “Should be banned from driving minimum two years, no questions asked. Could have caused a major accident if someone was joining in their lane lorry to right of them and nowhere to go,” one person said.

Another added that it was “dangerous, stupid and an offence”. It is a criminal offence to reverse at any point on a motorway, including on a slip road or the hard shoulder.
A third person commented: “With the standard of driving these days I’m really not surprised at all. What a stupid and dangerous move.”
